Genre Paintings come from various sources – for example I was parked outside the bank next to a hair salon when I noticed a wee lady in a cape with bleaching crimps all over her head, standing in the doorway smoking a cigarette. That image produced a painting which in turn led to a series including The Big Issue Seller, The Accordion Player and Half Time.

Portraits sometimes develop into genre paintings – for example The Working Lunch is a series of portraits (including a self-portrait) based on my second love – food and cooking. The portrait of my wee pal Jim the Window Cleaner includes elements of his life – like the street where he was born, and the pub that he drank in.
